This website focuses mostly on the practice of locational astrology, and all the factors and influences that can be read on and off the map to fully understand what the planetary influences are for any location in the world for any particular person. Your astrology relocation chart is another tool in the toolbox to help you see additional influences in a location that you cannot see solely on the map.
The relocation chart, therefore, plays a huge role in the totality of how to interpret and understand what planetary results and manifestations will be felt in any given location. So it is important that we take into account your relocation chart just as much as the astrology map lines. Because taken together, they tell a much bigger story than when taken individually.
To start, we must first know how to cast a relocation chart, which is different from a natal chart. An astrology relocation chart is basically the astrological calculation of your birth chart, but shifted as though you were born in a different location, using your same birth date and time. The idea is to see what your planetary arrangements are in a new location, based on the fixed planetary alignments around the globe at the moment of your birth.
This can easily be done with any astrological software, simply by going to your birth chart and selecting the option to cast a relocation chart for this birth data. You can input any location and it will automatically calculate a chart with the new location, using your same birth date and time.
This is useful because it allows us see how those same planetary energies might change for you based on their arrangements in these new locations. To understand further, your planets will always be in the same signs and aspects from one another no matter where you travel to in the world, because it is a snapshot of where all the planets were in the sky at the moment you were born. What changes is the Houses that these planets fall into and any aspects they might have to the Ascendant of the new location.
To illustrate how this works we will look at quarterback, Russell Wilson's birth chart in Cincinnati, OH, as well as various relocation charts for where he's lived to see how these planetary influences shifted for him in this way.

Relocation Chart
Where ever you go in the world, if you look East and see where the sky meets the Earth, that is basically what would be calculated as the Ascendant for that location, and it is the most potent spot of influence for your astrology relocation chart because it is the spot where the planets and signs rise over the Eastern Horizon. From there you would calculate what the degrees of planetary aspects are to the Ascendant, for that location, to determine the flavor of influence they would bring, which in this case is easily seen by which House Cusps the planets land on.
In Russell Wilson's case, when he was born in Cincinnati, OH, Capricorn was rising over the Eastern Horizon at 21°44', this is shown in his birth chart. Around 500 miles East, where he grew up in Richmond, VA, his relocation chart shows that Aquarius was rising over the Eastern Horizon at 02°39', there at that time. This shifted the Ascendant around 11° between signs, and rotated the planets proportionally.
Please Note: I am using the Sidereal Zodiac to calculate these charts, which means the signs are calculated differently than you might be used to seeing in the Tropical Zodiac. I primarily use the Sidereal Zodiac for my analysis. But regardless of which zodiac you use, the planets would be in the same house positions either way.
By knowing what is being activated in your various relocation charts, it allows you to be more in control of what planets you want to emphasize and how, and what planets you want to de-emphasize, as some planetary energies and house activations are more harmonious than others.
For instance, 5th and 9th House placements are very positive and harmonious activations, these are 120° Trines when looked at as an aspect to the Ascendant. These placements tend to bring more fortune, happiness, prosperity, and purpose when emphasized, and all planets tend to benefit from these placements, whether benefic, malefic, strong, or weak. But the range of manifestations varies greatly depending on which planet it is, and that planet's strength in your natal chart.
In Russell Wilson's relocation chart in Richmond, VA, we can see that Venus is situated very closely to the 9th House Cusp. Venus is at 13°54' Libra and the 9th House Cusp is at 11°54' Libra. This is a 2° orb which is pretty strong at 60% strength, calculated within a 5° range of influence.
This would lead us to believe that Russell Wilson experienced a good amount of fortune, happiness, and prosperity during his time growing up in Richmond, VA, especially since Venus is strong in her own sign of Libra.
He also has Chiron tightly situated on the 5th House Cusp, less than a one degree orb, around 90% strength. This would suggest good fortune (and good decision making) around health in this location. As well as support and good advice from counselors.
6th and 8th House placements, on the other hand, are more difficult placements. These are 150° Quincunx aspects to the Ascendant and are not harmonious placements. They are more often associated with pain, problems, friction, and other issues to work through.
We can see that Russell Wilson had no 6th or 8th House placements in Richmond, VA. Meaning not a lot of overtly difficult problems for him to work through out there. That isn't to say he didn't have any problems while he was growing up out there, just when strictly looking at these two placements, nothing is being activated.
I should point out, though, that his Moon is around 6 degrees away from the Descendant on the 6th House side, this is about a 20% strength activation, meaning he might have had to sit through some pain and work through some issues around mother out there.
So in this very simplistic example, you'd want to emphasize 5th and 9th House placements in your relocation chart, while de-emphasizing any 6th or 8th House placements. Of course it is not always this simple or practical to move toward or away from these house cusp activations, and there are a host of other influences to consider, this is simply an illustration of how to begin looking and thinking about your relocation chart, and how the planetary influences that can be seen in the chart might manifest in that location.
But remember, just because a planet is in a certain house does not mean it is being activated in that location. This is where angularity and orb come into play. The closer the planets are to the various house cusps the more influence they will have, based on these placements. This is what I call, House Cusp Activation, which can shift quite a bit from one location to another. I use two House Systems when determining these activations, Porphyry and Equal House, both of which I describe below.
They way I use it is by looking at the House Cusps for two different House systems, Equal House and Porphyry. Equal House activations are simple because all you need to do is look at the degree of the Ascendant and compare it to any planetary degrees around the relocation chart to see if any of the planets are close to that same degree in a different sign. A 5 degree orb is appropriate in this case, the tighter the orb the stronger the influence. Looking at it this way the aspects are very clear and exact.
To illustrate how this works we can look at Russell Wilson's relocation chart in Denver, CO, where his Moon is at 26°54' Cancer, compared to the Ascendant which is at 26°08' Sagittarius. Since they are the same degree, this is a very tight 8th House Equal House Cusp activation, which would likely mean he will have a lot of ongoing difficult emotional situations to deal with so as long as he is living out there. This is a pretty difficult placement overall, it might even be tough on his marriage, but he does have the grace and blessings of Venus on the 9th House side of the Midheaven to help carry him through much of that difficulty.
The Porphyry House System calculates the angles of the Midheaven (MC) and Imum Coeli (IC) to determine the strongest parts of the chart outside of the Ascendant. These are exact 10th House and 4th House positions and tend to deviate from the 10th and 4th Equal House calculations. From here, the intermediate house cusps are calculated by dividing the distance from the angles equally from one another. The house cusps we used to illustrate Russell Wilson's relocation chart in Richmond, VA were the Porphyry Cusps, that is why the calculation of the degrees where shown there.
So this leaves us with two separate house cusp activation possibilities for each house, calculated slightly differently between the two house systems. Sometimes they are very close to one another, other times they are more distant. But in both cases, when any of these house cusps get activated, the planetary influence should be expected to be felt in that place.
There are twelve houses in astrology, so therefore there are twelve house cusps for us to consider when looking at a relocation chart. In the above examples we touched on only a few of the houses, the 5th, 6th, 8th, and 9th, in order to illustrate how they should be read. But to make the most of this technique it is best to know all twelve Astrology House Meanings, so you can best gauge how a planet will manifest its significations if it is situated near one of the house cusps.
